How do you use essential oils to help a dog with asthma?

Question:

“I have an Old English Sheepdog that has asthma, he is 6 yrs old. The vet has prescribed theophylline, which he has been taking for about a month. I am looking for some natural remedies to treat this, as the meds do have some bad side effects after long term use & per the vet he will need for the rest of his life. Do you know or anything that can be given or applied to help with his breathing, or do you know of someone or some place I can find out? I did find one place, but have not ordered the product yet, because I’m not sure how long he would need to be off the theophylline to get it out of his system before using something natural, or if I could just switch him over from the theophylline to the natural remedy. Any suggestions or information would be greatly appreciated. I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you for your time & information.”

Answer:

“Several  oils are wonderful with breathing issues.  The first that comes to mind is Breathe Ease.  It can be used in a diffusers as well as given the dog to sniff.  You can also rub some on his chest and neck (and nose, if the dog will tolerate it).  Others include Black Cumin, Copaiba Balsam , Lymph Detox, Litsea Cubeba & Pennyroyal.  You should also review what kind of household cleaners you use and definitely never use the kinds of carpet cleaning supplies that you shake into carpets, then vacuum up.”
