Substitutions and Measurements

Here are a few guidelines to help you.

Oil Substitutions

Sometimes you find a recipe you really want to try but you don’t have one or two of the oils it calls for. We understand that so here are a few ideas for substitutions that might help you. They aren’t always exact but they are close enough to make it easier for you.

Original Oil Substitute oil(s)
Jasmine Ylang Ylang
Neroli Red Mandarin + Petitgrain Bigarade (Equal parts)
Caraway Anise Seed + Fennel Seed (Equal parts)
Chamomile, German or Roman Lavender
Bergamot Grapefruit
Tea Tree Cajeput + Lavender (Equal parts)
Lemon Lime
Melissa Lemon + Petitgrain Bigarade (Equal parts)
Sandalwood Benzoin + Cedarwood (Equal parts)

Rose Rose Geranium
Allspice Cinnamon Bark, Clove Bud, Nutmeg, & Black Pepper (Equal parts)
Benzoin Blend of Vanilla (4 times the amount)

Next are basic drop equivalents. These are a rough estimate  but they should serve well in measurements. (Size of drops depends upon the size of the dropper opening as well as the viscosity of the oil.)

   Drop Equivalents

  • 20 drops = 1/5 teaspoon = 1 ml
  • 100 drops = 1 teaspoon = 5 ml
  • 300 drops = 1 tablespoon = 15 ml
  • 600 drops = 1 ounce = 30 ml
