Can You Use CBD During Pregnancy?

Pregnancy is often a time of wonder and joy, but expecting mothers can also experience a lot of discomfort both during the pregnancy and after giving birth. As a result, many people turn to some form of medication for relief. However, in today’s world, more and more mothers are looking for safe, natural alternatives to traditional medicine. Many are familiar with CBD’s ability to ease many discomforts and ailments, including nausea, anxiety, depression, and more — all of which are common in pregnant women.

As the world learns more about CBD, many mothers wonder if CBD is safe to use during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. While CBD is a natural product and could thus prove to be safer than other medication options, there is simply no scientific evidence to yet determine an answer.

The majority of cannabinoid research studies focus on the effects that THC has on a growing baby. The results show that THC can inhibit embryo growth, affect birth weight, and more. And while we know that CBD does not act the same way as THC in adults, there are no confirmed answers that say it is also safe for developing babies.

Researches have conducted a few studies on mice to determine the effect of CBD on a developing embryo. The results: CBD does not have the same harmful effects as THC does. As a result, some people say that using CBD is safe as long as it is completely free of THC. However, it is important that you use extreme caution when basing decisions off of studies that were performed on mice. Why? Simply because we are unsure whether humans will experience the same results.

We know that babies have a working endocannabinoid system, even when they are a fetus composed of just two cells. We also know that everything a pregnant mother consumes has the potential of affecting a developing baby. Thus, if you consume CBD, it has the potential of affecting your baby and their endocannabinoid system even from the very beginning stages of pregnancy. Because of this potential influence, and because there is no confirmed answer as to whether CBD is safe for pregnant mothers and their babies, it is always best to first talk with your doctor before taking any CBD while pregnant.

CBD and Breastfeeding

Once the baby is born, some mothers may think that it is safe to start using CBD since the baby is no longer inside of them and not directly affected by what they eat. While that may be true, what you consume can still affect your baby if you are breastfeeding. Breast milk already contains cannabinoids, the most common being 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG). This and other endocannabinoids are not only safe for babies to consume, but they are also vital to both pre- and postnatal development. This is because the endocannabinoids stimulate necessary responses for the baby, such as the suckling response.

However, plant-derived cannabinoids can still influence a baby’s endocannabinoid system , just like an adult’s can. This means that if you consume CBD and breastfeed, your baby could also consume the CBD cannabinoids. We know that CBD can positively affect an adult’s health, but there is a shortage of studies done on how CBD affects babies who are breastfeeding. As a result, we simply do not know whether it is entirely safe for babies to consume CBD.

As always, please consult with your doctor before using CBD, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. CBD is a great, natural product that can help mothers find relief from pregnancy pains and discomforts, as well as Postpartum Depression. If you are curious whether CBD is safe for you to use, consult with your doctor and make sure you are 100% comfortable with whatever you decide to do.
